Pre-Assignment Training Course (8 hrs)

The 8-hour Pre-Assignment Training Course is the first required course. This is a general introductory course. The course provides students with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of a security guard in New York State. Upon completing this course and passing the exam, the student is issued a training certificate. This certificate must accompany the security guard's registration application when submitted to the Department of State. Once the application is submitted, the guard has 90 days to complete the second training course.

- Legal powers and limitations
- Emergency situations
- Communications and public relations
- Access control
- Different types of access control
- Ethics and Conduct

To successfully complete this course, the students must take a test and achieve a passing score. The exam will consist of multiple-choice and true or false questions. All material covered in the course, including an overview of the duties of a New York security guard, will be reviewed before the test.
